In Memoriam
Derek Cowan (1960-2017)
On Monday, February 6, 2017, Derek Cowan of Sherwood Park passed away at
the age of 56.
Derek had served as a mentor to officials in the Alberta Men's Roller Hockey League (AMRHL) for the last two seasons (2015 and 2016). They were very fortunate to have had him. Derek had a real passion for officiating hockey extending back to when he was but 13 years old. He officiated ice hockey at very high levels for many years (e.g., Western Hockey League, Alberta Junior Hockey League, Canadian Interuniversity Sport, Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference), including Roller Hockey International (RHI), a pro league, back in the mid 90s. Derek was an avid volunteer in the minor ranks of ice, roller and ball hockey as a coach, official and director in the various Sherwood Park associations, including SPINLINE, dating back to before he had children of his own. He also served as the Provincial Referee-in-Chief for Hockey Alberta In Line (HAIL) for four years. Derek's son, Jeremy, has played in the AMRHL for the Stealth since 2010 when he was but 17 years old. You can quite often find Derek's daughter, Madison, and her mother, Corinnia at the rink during the course of the season. Derek's laughter and influence will be sorely missed amongst all of the AMRHL's members. |
